LosCon is a volunteer-run science fiction convention that takes place over Thanksgiving weekend. (It's run by many of the people who run ALA.) This year's LosCon theme is "But wait, there's more!" And "more" definitely includes cosplay. LosCon is not primarily an anime convention, but it will include a cosplay area, photo backdrops, video programming, an AMV contest at quite a bit of other anime related programming. It's a friendly convention, and we like cosplayers.

Our confirmed attractions include.

A dedicated cosplay area.
Two different backdrops for photography.
A greenscreen backdrop, so you can add your own background.
A masquerade that would love to include your costume creations.
A quiet and friendly con suite, with free snacks and beverages.
A costume repair station.
Fan Tables for folks who want to promote other conventions and events.
At least one anime related dealer (we're working on getting more, promise!)
An art show that will accept your art for sale.
A whole slew of not-quite-anime-related activities concerning such things as speculative fiction, fantasy, magic, superheroes, military and historical fiction, myths and legends, bug eyed monsters and aliens, proto-science fiction, science and technology, horror, gaming, art and writing.
And finally, an anime video room with continuous anime programming including AMV's and an AMV contest.

I'm also told that FUNimation (producer of many fine anime) and Mechanized Propulsion Systems (producer of actual giant robots) will also participate.

We are also working on other anime related stuff, and we're very open to suggestions (although we don't have a lot of money.)

Basically, if you can afford to go to an extra convention in November, and like the idea of cosplaying in a friendly convention that includes more than just anime and manga, LosCon might be for you. But if you have limited funds, and you prefer a pure anime convention, then of course you should skip LosCon, and save your money for Anime Los Angeles and AnimeExpo.

The official LosCon website, when it's ready, will be at http://www.loscon.org/36/. (There's just a splash page and a registration link there now. I suggest you check the site sometime after the middle of March.)

By the way, if you have a convention or other event that you'd like to promote, come down to the picnic and hand out flyers. I'll even feed you. LosCon does not want to compete with other conventions, and we want to emphasize that if you have limited funds and prefer a pure anime convention, LosCon will not be your first choice. Or your second. Frankly, our aim is for a crowd of otaku to attend LosCon and to say afterwards that it was worth going to LosCon as well as the other conventions they attended. We're not trying to take anyone away from any other event.
